Names, Not Numbers

“Names, Not Numbers was a program that helped tie together my final year at GOA as the project reflected all of the values instilled in us at school. The stories I heard are not just archived on film; they will live on with me forever.”
— Elizabeth Irwin ’18
Names, Not Numbers participant
Names, Not Numbers is an interactive, multi-media Holocaust project created by educator Tova Fish-Rosenberg. This program transforms the traditional study of the Holocaust into an inter-generational program that preserves Holocaust survivors’ stories through the production of a documentary film accepted into the archives of the Jewish National and University Library of Israel in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem and the Gottesman Library at Yeshiva University.

Throughout the school year, students in the program further their Holocaust studies, as well as learn valuable interviewing, filmmaking and editing skills from professionals in these fields. Divided into groups, students interview their assigned survivor, engaging in serious and meaningful dialogue and forge relationships with them. Their project culminates in a final event each spring where students, survivors and family members reunite for an intimate dinner followed by a film screening for the community to celebrate and honor these heroic men and women.
