Fasting in Solidarity with Israel

Rabbi Danny Nevins
There are many spiritual responses to crisis—as Jews we pray, we give tzedakah, we rally and march…and sometimes, we fast. I have committed to fast tomorrow in solidarity with the people of Israel. Many rabbis and other Jewish leaders have joined this fast, organized by Hadar, which is open to all who wish to participate. We are urgently concerned with the fate of the captives taken by Hamas, as well as of soldiers and other security personnel who are in harms way as they seek to defend the country from further attacks. From sunrise to sunset tomorrow we will deny ourselves food and drink, adding petitions to God in our prayers. I don’t know if this fast will elicit divine intervention, but it will surely raise our own consciousness of the danger facing our people in Israel.
