GOA Delegation Returns from Successful New Jersey Model Congress

From March 16-17, our delegation of high school students attended the New Jersey Model Congress competition at Rider University where they debated policy, negotiated amendments and practiced their political skills.

Party Leader Shayne C. won a gavel for leading the Democratic party to reach their legislative targets, while Party Whip Austin C. won a certificate for helping the Republican party meet their legislative goals.
Solomon L. also won an Outstanding Delegate award. Rachel N., Solomon L., and Austin C. won awards for successfully debating and navigating their legislation through Congress and having their bills pass through the full House or Senate. Getting a bill enacted in full session is a significant achievement as only about 20 of the 200 plus bills submitted to Congress are enacted. In addition, 17 of Golda Och Academy’s 19 bills were passed out of committee.

During the two days at Rider University, students debated up to two dozen bills in their committees and another dozen or so more in full House/Senate sessions. They debated in front of their peers in committee and over 100 people in full sessions.

The awards are a tribute to the teamwork and support the entire delegation gave to one another.  They persevered through some disappointments, they argued on behalf of one another’s bills, kept each other going through long days and in general represented the best qualities of Golda Och Academy.

Yasher koach to all of our delegates for their hard work: Noga A., Aly B., Austin C., Shayne C., Jolie F., Oren G., Nomi H., Abby H., Marissa J., Sol L., Maya L., Emily M., Cayla M., Rachel N. and Katriela N.
